Participation in Data Collections

Appen collects samples of spoken and written language from native speakers of many languages in a variety of situations.

  • telephonydx1.jpgSpeech samples collected are cut into small speech segments, which are then pooled, digitised and used to train computers to recognise the segments to decode what a speaker is saying. For example, a recording in a car will collect speakers saying commands that will control the air-conditioning of a car. This speech data will then be used to train a system resident in a car that can act on the spoken command to turn on or turn off the air conditioning. The driver's hands remain on the wheel all the while.
  • writingdx.jpgWriting samples are collected for a number of applications. Copies of texts that are translations from one language into another assist in training machine translation systems; handwriting samples collected are used to train computers to recognise handwriting, for example in facsimiles or writing tablets; written text such as email, word processed documents, blogs, etc., are used to train systems in parsing and decoding language in all the various ways people write.

In all of these data collections, the identity of the person is not required or retained. We need to gather data across different ages, genders and dialects to be sure that the systems that are built can recognise everyone regardless of age, gender or regional dialect. Apply now.
